For the last 4-5 months I've been giving some very serious thought to getting Gastric Bypass surgery (or perhaps the lap band). My friend (and current MF health coach) started MediFast about 2 mos. ago and thus the reason I'm giving this a try. I personally know and have met at least 25 people that have had the surgery done. All but one (now two) had results they were pleased with. It's run the gamut from some with a great deal of trouble afterwards to others with no trouble at all. I asked all the same question....would you do it again, and the answer has always been yes. However of the 25 or so, I know of one that died because of the surgery (apparently she was in very poor health to begin with and shouldn't have had it done). Yesterday, though, I saw something that has made me realize that Gastric Bypass is not something I think I want to do.
I found out that an acquaintance of mine (a friend of a friend in Alaska....)died about 4 or 5 days ago. She'd had gastric bypass about 8 years ago and apparently, essentially the surgery didn't go very well. Ultimately she ended up an an anorexic-like state because she couldn't digest her food like she needed to. This led to brittle bones that broke under her own general weight, and she had lots of surgeries and hospitalizations due to organ failures about a year after the surgery.
I took this whole thing as a bit of a wake up call. What it actually means is that I HAVE to make MediFast work and learn how to eat normally again (again??? did I EVER know how to eat normally?) once I'm done.
Oh, that's awful. I have one friend who looks great but another who had it as a teenager, with no counseling, and ended up 150 pounds overweight again. I didn't realize until talking to her that it causes massive vitamin deficiencies.
ReplyDeleteIt WAS awful....I hadn't been in touch with this gal in YEARS and I was torn up for several days after finding out about her death. It REALLY bothered me, because I realized, she ended up gone at 40, all because she just wanted to be thin.
ReplyDeleteUgh. An acquaintance of mine had it recently and I've been following on Facebook. She is starting to really look different but it is pretty scary too.
